Using An External Monitor at Full Resolution with your MacBook

One of the unfortunate downsides of an Apple MacBook is that you can’t use an external monitor at full resolution without first tricking the operating system. Apple doesn’t provide a control panel that allows you to select this option. Instead follow these steps:

1. Plug your MacBook into a power source
2. Set the external monitor to the desired resolution (it won’t show up that way, but don’t worry about that for now)
2. Unplug the monitor
3. Unplug any external USB devices
4. Close the lid so that the MacBook goes to sleep
5. Plug in the monitor
6. Plug in an external keyboard or mouse
7. Click the keys or the mouse

The MacBook should wake to display video on the screen but the “snore” light will continue to fade in and out. It’s critical that the MacBook be plugged into a power source otherwise it will continually go back to sleep.
